El tr\u00e1fico mar\u00edtimo en torno a la Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica -localizada en la encrucijada de las grandes rutas mar\u00edtimas- deja una huella significativa de emisiones a la atm\u00f3sfera de los principales contaminantes; los \u00f3xidos de azufre y nitr\u00f3geno SOx y NOx entre ellos.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando los buques se aproximan a puerto o se encuentran atracados, \u00e9sta contaminaci\u00f3n afecta directamente a la poblaci\u00f3n de las ciudades portuarias. As\u00ed la conexi\u00f3n de los buques a la red el\u00e9ctrica evita que las elevadas concentraciones de estos contaminantes no superen los valores l\u00edmite.<\/p>\n<p>La Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de la Salud (OMS) establece para tales contaminantes un valor medio de 20 y 40 \u03bcg\/m<sup>3<\/sup>respectivamente. La OMS considera que sobrepasados tales valores de la concentraci\u00f3n existe riesgo para la poblaci\u00f3n:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cEl SO2 puede afectar al sistema respiratorio y las funciones pulmonares, y causa irritaci\u00f3n ocular. La inflamaci\u00f3n del sistema respiratorio provoca tos, secreci\u00f3n mucosa y agravamiento del asma y la bronquitis cr\u00f3nica; asimismo, aumenta la propensi\u00f3n de las personas a contraer infecciones del sistema respiratorio. Los ingresos hospitalarios por cardiopat\u00edas y la mortalidad aumentan en los d\u00edas en que los niveles de SO2 son m\u00e1s elevados. En combinaci\u00f3n con el agua, el SO2 se convierte en \u00e1cido sulf\u00farico, que es el principal componente de la lluvia \u00e1cida que causa la deforestaci\u00f3n.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Estudios epidemiol\u00f3gicos han revelado que los s\u00edntomas de bronquitis en ni\u00f1os asm\u00e1ticos aumentan en relaci\u00f3n con la exposici\u00f3n prolongada al NO2.
